About the role
Haul Truck Operators drive the ultra-class dump trucks — Caterpillar 793 and 797, Komatsu 930E, Liebherr T282 — that move iron ore, coal, gold ore and overburden from the pit to the crusher or waste dump. It is the most common entry point into a well paid Australian mining career because the training pathway is short, the base pay is well over $130,000, and the majors run 24/7 operations that constantly need operators. In autonomous haulage operations at Rio Tinto's Pilbara mines and Fortescue's Solomon and Chichester hubs, operators have evolved into Autonomous Controllers monitoring fleets of driverless trucks from a remote operations centre in Perth — a role that pays a similar rate while offering a residential lifestyle. On manual sites, a typical shift is 12 hours of loading under an excavator or shovel, hauling a fixed circuit, dumping, and returning while managing tyre wear, fuel and dispatch instructions. Skilled operators who add water cart, service truck, dozer and grader VOCs to their haul truck tickets can shift between machines during a swing and lift their earnings toward $180,000. Rosters vary from 8:6 residential to 2:1 FIFO out of Perth or Brisbane. The work is repetitive but demands sharp concentration — trucks weigh 400 tonnes fully loaded and a single lapse can cause catastrophic damage. It is also physically easy compared to trades work, which makes it accessible to a wide range of workers including women and career changers over 40. Career progression paths include Trainer Assessor, Production Supervisor, Mine Controller and Autonomous Systems Operator. For someone with a clean HR licence and a Standard 11 induction, haul truck operating is realistically the fastest six-figure job in the country.
Certificates & qualifications required
- Heavy Rigid (HR) or Heavy Combination (HC) driver's licence

- Site-specific induction (BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG, Roy Hill each have their own)
- Verification of Competency (VOC) on the specific truck model — 793, 797, 930E
- First Aid Certificate
- National Police Check and pre-employment medical + drug and alcohol screen
How to get a job in this field
- Get your HR licence and Standard 11 induction — total cost around $2,000–$3,500.
