General construction induction. Absolute minimum. Do it online or classroom, valid nationally.
The gold standard entry-level mining induction. Covers hazards, emergency response, isolation, working at heights.
Heavy Rigid (2 axles + trailer) or Heavy Combination. Held 12+ months before you can operate on many sites.
Directing loads. Prerequisite for basic rigging and part of most heavy-lift crews.
Levels stack. Advanced Rigging opens all the highest-paid shutdown work.
Fall arrest, harness inspection, edge protection. Refresh every 2 years.
Standby, gas testing, rescue plans. Big earner during shutdowns.
CPR refresh yearly, full first aid every 3 years.
Cheap tickets that make a resume stand out.
Non-negotiable for tradespeople. Overseas trades need a Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) assessment.
Regulatory & compliance essentials
- WA Work Health & Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 govern most WA sites.
- Every worker must complete a site-specific induction — it's on top of Standard 11.
- Fitness for Work: expect random drug & alcohol testing. Prescription meds must be declared.
- Working near explosives, high-voltage or shafts triggers extra competency assessments.
- National Police Check and proof of right to work in Australia are standard.
