Simulator Training Australia and comparable providers (Immersive Technologies, ThoroughTec, 5DT and their partner RTOs) exist to solve one of the hardest chicken-and-egg problems in Australian mining recruitment: no one is legally permitted to touch a $6M haul truck without a site induction, but no site will induct you without prior evidence you can operate one. Courses & offerings
Standard product offerings include: Caterpillar 793F and 797F ultra-class rear-dump haul trucks; Komatsu 930E electric-drive haul trucks; Caterpillar D10 and D11 dozers; Caterpillar 24M and 16M motor graders; Caterpillar 992 wheel loaders; and hydraulic excavators including the Liebherr R9800 and Komatsu PC5500. Sessions are typically sold in 4-hour, 8-hour, 16-hour or 40-hour packages and can be combined into a multi-machine block. Each completed session issues a signed certificate that lists the machine type, cumulative hours logged, and specific competencies demonstrated (haul-road ramp descent, spot-in for loader, dump into crusher, emergency shutdown procedures).
Career outcomes & earnings
Simulator hours do not replace a High Risk Work Licence, a site induction, or on-the-job verification of competency — nothing does. What they do is materially shift the odds of being shortlisted for one of the Tier 1 entry-level operator programs (Rio Tinto Ready, Fortescue Trade Up, BHP FutureFit Academy). Recruiters for those programs are screening thousands of applications and use simulator certificates as one of the primary tie-breakers between candidates with otherwise identical resumes. In some contractor and mid-tier producer settings, simulator hours can also compress the on-site verification period from four weeks to two, which the employer values because unproductive verification time costs money.
Insider tips
Book with a provider that uses actual Immersive Technologies PRO4 or ThoroughTec CYBERMINE hardware — cheaper 'gaming rig' simulators are not accepted by Tier 1 recruiters. Always request the printed certificate with logged hours and machine make/model; a vague 'completion of course' letter is worth almost nothing. Combine simulator hours with a HR or HC truck licence and Standard 11 in the same six-week block — that combination is the strongest possible entry-level resume.
