Overview
TAFE WA is a network of five state-government training providers — North Metropolitan TAFE, South Metropolitan TAFE, Central Regional TAFE, South Regional TAFE and North Regional TAFE — that between them deliver more nationally recognised mining qualifications each year than every private RTO in the country combined. For someone building a mining career in Western Australia, TAFE is the default. Fee structures are heavily subsidised under the Jobs and Skills WA framework, campuses sit inside the physical geography of the resource sector (Karratha, Port Hedland, Newman, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Collie), and industry partnerships mean that a student on the Pilbara campus is often trained on the exact same equipment specification they'll operate on a Rio Tinto or BHP site. Trainers are typically former site supervisors, superintendents, or ticketed operators with 20+ years of on-country experience.
Courses & offerings
The mining-specific catalogue is deep. Entry-level students start with Certificate II in Resources & Infrastructure Work Preparation (RII20220) which packages White Card, HLTAID011 First Aid, RIIWHS204E Working Safely at Heights, and RIICOM201E Communicate in the Workplace into a single funded qualification. From there, most progress into Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations (RII30820) — the operator ticket — or Certificate III in Underground Metalliferous Mining (RII30120). Trade apprentices sit their off-the-job blocks in Cert III Engineering (Mechanical Trade / Fabrication Trade / Auto Electrical / Electrotechnology) at metropolitan or regional TAFE campuses. Higher-tier qualifications include the Diploma of Surface Operations Management, Diploma of Underground Metalliferous Mining Management, and specialist skill sets in explosives, drill and blast, and mine surveying. Truck licence programs (HR, HC and MC) are delivered as standalone short courses through the same campuses.

TAFE WA graduates enter the sector via three main routes: direct hire onto a Tier 1 miner's operator program (Rio Tinto Ready, FMG Trade Up, BHP FutureFit Academy), placement through a preferred-supplier labour hire firm, or contractor entry with the likes of Monadelphous, NRW, Macmahon and Downer. Starting salaries for a fully-ticketed Cert III Surface Extraction graduate typically range from $95,000 to $130,000 base in the first year, moving to $140,000–$180,000 within two to three years once ratings are added. Trade apprentices completing a Cert III at TAFE WA regularly transition into $150,000–$220,000+ post-trade roles on Pilbara maintenance and shutdown crews.

Enrol at the campus closest to the mine site you actually want to work at (Karratha for Rio/BHP, Port Hedland for BHP/FMG, Kalgoorlie for gold, Collie for coal); trainers usually have direct site relationships in their local corridor.
