Standard 11 is the Gold-Standard Entry-level Mining Induction and is Legally required for anyone working on a Queensland Coal Mine. Its now Importance and Reputation means WA Iron Ore, Gold and Nickel sites also treat it as Strong Evidence you understand Mine-Site risk. The full course runs five days at an RTO, mixing Classroom Theory with Practical Assessments and typically Costs between $500 and $900 depending on Provider and Location. You'll cover the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act, Hazard Identification, Isolation and Tagging, working at Heights, Confined spaces, Hazardous chemicals, Emergency response, Fire safety, Manual handling, and Fitness for Work. Assessment includes written Exams, a Practical scenario, and often a fitness component. Once you Pass Standard 11 Technically is never expires but most sites require a Refresher course of (typically one day) every two to five years, and every new employer will also run their own Site-Specific Induction on top. How to get your Standard 11 Mining Induction
Standard 11 is officially the Generic Induction for Queensland Coal Mines, formalised under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the associated Recognised Standard 11. Even though it's a Queensland regulation, its rigour has made it the de-facto national benchmark — WA iron ore majors, NSW coal operators, and gold miners across the country routinely list it as 'preferred' or 'required'. The course runs five full days at an approved RTO, combining classroom theory (hazard identification, risk assessment, isolation procedures, emergency response, coal-mining-specific legislation, fitness for work, fatigue management) with practical assessments where you'll physically demonstrate tagging out equipment, donning breathing apparatus, using fire extinguishers, and performing basic first aid. Written exams are open-book but time-limited, and you must score above 80% across every module. Prerequisites include your White Card, 100 points of ID, and a general medical fitness declaration; some providers also require a pre-course numeracy and literacy assessment. Cost sits between $500 and $900, with Bowen Basin providers (Mackay, Emerald, Moranbah) typically cheaper than Brisbane-based ones. Once you pass, you'll receive a Statement of Attainment and a Standard 11 photo ID card. The qualification does not legally expire, but industry practice mandates a one-day refresher every two to five years — most Tier 1 miners will not accept a Standard 11 older than five years without a refresh.
