Officially called CPCWHS1001 General Construction Induction, it's a nationally recognised unit of competency delivered by Registered Training Organisations either in a classroom for a single day or entirely online for around $50 to $150. The course covers your legal duties under Work Health & Safety law, common site hazards, safe work method statements, hazard reporting, incident procedures, PPE requirements, and how to raise a safety concern without fear of reprisal. Once issued, your card is valid nationally and does not expire, though some employers ask for a refresh if you've been out of the industry for more than two years. Keep the physical card in your wallet and a digital scan on your phone — recruiters routinely ask you to email a copy before they'll even book a phone screen. If you're serious about mining, book your White Card first, then Standard 11, then everything else. It's the cheapest ticket you'll ever buy and it unlocks every other conversation.
How to get your White Card (CPCWHS1001)
Getting your White Card is the fastest, cheapest first step into Australian mining and construction. The unit code CPCWHS1001 (General Construction Induction) is a nationally recognised qualification, meaning a card issued in one state is accepted everywhere except NSW and QLD where you must transfer it to the state regulator (SafeWork NSW or WorkSafe QLD) within 60 days of arriving. You have two delivery options. The classroom option runs a single six to eight hour day at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), includes a written and verbal assessment, and issues your card within 3–10 working days. The online option is self-paced, typically takes four to six hours to complete, and includes a live video verification call with an assessor to confirm your identity and confirm you actually did the coursework yourself. Bring 100 points of Australian ID (driver's licence, Medicare card, passport, utility bill) — this is non-negotiable and the number one reason people get delayed. Anyone aged 14 or over can sit the course; there are no prerequisites, no medical, no fitness component. Pass rates are close to 100% because the assessment is competency-based rather than ranked, but you must demonstrate genuine understanding of safety concepts — not just tick boxes. Labour hire companies including Programmed, WorkPac, HAYS Mining, Chandler Macleod, and One Key Resources will often reimburse the cost of your White Card once you've completed a swing with them — always ask before you pay. Some Tier 1 miners including BHP, Rio Tinto, and Fortescue occasionally run fully funded pre-employment programs (BHP FutureFit Academy, Rio Tinto Traineeships) that include the White Card as part of the enrolment package.
