Bowen Basin & Mackay
Queensland's Coking Coal Heartland

Overview
The Bowen Basin runs 600km down the spine of Central Queensland and produces the majority of the World's Seaborne Metallurgical Coal — the specific type of Coal used to Make Steel. Coal from the Bowen Basin is railed east to the Coast and shipped through the Ports of Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay, Abbot Point and Gladstone to Steel Mills in Japan, South Korea, India and Vietnam. The Coalfields are anchored by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) — the world's largest exporter of Seaborne Metallurgical Coal — plus Anglo American, Glencore, Peabody, Whitehaven, Coronado, Stanmore and Yancoal. Mining towns such as Moranbah, Dysart, Blackwater, Middlemount and Clermont are pure Mining Communities purpose-built for the industry, while Mackay on the Coast is the region's Family-Friendly Support Hub for Trades, Logistics and Engineering. Employment structure is dominated by FIFO from Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville and Newcastle on 7:7 or 5:2/4:3 rosters, with residential Roles concentrated in Moranbah and Mackay. The Queensland Coal Sector is different from WA Iron Ore in two important ways. First, entry is genuinely accessible — Standard 11 Generic Induction (RIIWHS204) is a 5-day paid Course anyone can complete before applying, and Labour Hire agencies actively recruit green Trades Assistants and Operators. Second, Wages are backed by legally binding Enterprise Agreements that push Operator base salaries into the $130,000 to $180,000 range and Skilled Underground and Trade Roles well beyond $220,000. Coal has been under political and financial pressure but demand for Coking Coal remains stubborn, and the region continues to hire aggressively.

Geology & Resources
The Bowen Basin is a Permian-age Sedimentary Basin containing multiple Coal Seams that yield some of the highest-quality Hard Coking Coal on Earth. Individual seams — Goonyella Middle, German Creek, Vermont, Rangal — are famous names in the global Coal trade. Coal here is mined by both Truck-and-Shovel Open-Cut and by Longwall and Bord-and-Pillar Underground methods, with Draglines still used at several large operations.
Who's Hiring — Major Employers
BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) operates seven of the biggest mines — Goonyella Riverside, Peak Downs, Saraji, Broadmeadow, Blackwater, Daunia and Caval Ridge. Anglo American operates Grasstree, Aquila, Moranbah North, Capcoal and Dawson. Glencore operates Newlands, Collinsville and Rolleston. Peabody operates Coppabella, Millennium and North Goonyella. Coronado operates Curragh. Whitehaven operates Blackwater and Daunia after buying them from BMA. Stanmore, Yancoal and Middlemount Coal round out the majors. Underground and Development Contractors — Downer, Thiess, Golding, Sedgman, BUMA — employ another huge slice of the workforce.
Lifestyle, Rosters & Living
Moranbah is the largest inland Bowen Basin town — around 8,000 people — with a full school, pool, gym, Woolworths, Coles and IGA. Dysart, Blackwater, Middlemount and Emerald are smaller but self-sufficient. Mackay on the Coast is the family choice — a real city of 120,000 with beaches, restaurants, an international-standard hospital and 40+ direct flights a day to Brisbane. Weather in the Basin is genuinely hot and humid October to March; the wet season can drop 400mm of rain in a week and shut sites down. Winters (May–September) are dry, mild and beautiful.
How to Get Hired Here
Standard 11 is Non-Negotiable and is the fastest ticket to a first Bowen Basin start. Book it through iMINCO, MICL, MTIA or any recognised Registered Training Organisation. From there, the entry points are Labour Hire firms Programmed, WorkPac, Chandler Macleod, One Key Resources and Hays Mining, all of whom recruit Trades Assistants, Utility Operators, Coal Handling Plant Operators, Nippers and Truck Drivers. HR (Heavy Rigid) truck licence and a Coal Board Medical are highly recommended before applying. Trades — Diesel Fitters, Boilermakers, Auto Electricians, HV Electricians — should target the Contractor Pool for Shutdown work as the fastest way in.
Long-Term Outlook
Steel demand from India and Southeast Asia is expected to keep the Bowen Basin busy through the 2030s and 2040s. Whitehaven's post-BMA acquisition strategy, Stanmore's Poitrel Extension, Anglo's Aquila and Grosvenor rebuilds, and BMA's Broadmeadow-East continuation are all in active hiring phases.
